Pet Friendly Homes in Boca Raton: Dogs and Allergies in South Florida

Dogs and Allergies in South Florida

Dogs and Allergies in South Florida

Dogs are much like people when it comes to allergies living in south Florida.  They get allergies too!  South Florida is a hotbed for allergies, although I acquired mine in New York.  So there goes that theory, if you ask me!

pretty little dog in gated community in delray beach flNevertheless, some dogs can and do get allergies.  If you are new to Boca Raton, watch out for Allergies in Dogs.   I've had dogs with food allergies as well as seasonal allergies.   We have lots of flowering plants and melaluca here and, while beautiful to look at, your furry friend could be allergic.

I try to take precautions.  Each time I take my dogs out, their paws are wiped when they come in.   I try to keep them away from freshly mowed grass, anything freshly sprayed for weeds or whatever, or lots of leaves on the ground.   Especially after they have sprayed the grass.  I, also, keep them away from flowers.  There is one bush here that has thorns, called crown of thorns.  We steer clear of those.

And, of course, weekly baths or as close as I can get to it.   And brushing.

If you are living with dogs in pet-friendly gated communities in Boca Raton or south Florida, keep an eye out for the symptoms of allergies:  scratching, chewing, ear rubbing, knots in ears or on paws red skin, dry skin and flaking, sneezing, diarrhea, licking -you just never know. And deal with them before they get out of hand.

I know this is not a topic we like to discuss, but it does it exist.  And if you live in Boca Raton or Boynton Beach FL or anywhere in this area, you need to be aware.

And just like their human counterparts, there are allergy medications and food for pets.  I have one who eats a novel protein - kangaroo - and she loves it.   They have recently been given injections of Cytopoint or Apoquel tablets.

If you're planning a move to Boca Raton Florida, or have been here a while and have dogs, keep an eye out. Hopefully, your dog will never get allergies (some don't) but you just never know.

Happy Sunday Elyse Berman, PA, CRS , we definitely have to be aware of allergies with our fur babies. I wouldn't want them suffering the way I do!

Wow, Elyse... I had no idea about dog allergies and Florida conditions. I don't think we have quite this much of problem here in Charlotte. We had two very long-lived dogs with nary an allergy issue.

Had not ever thought of dogs and allergies...being a cat person though they are probably just as common...I do know that Dini complains loudly when we sneeze...a sort of allergy in reverse Elyse Berman, PA, CRS !

Hi Elise, Thanks for the information about dog allergies in your area.  Although, we don't have as many issues with animal allergies here, my daughter's dog suffers with them and has to take a prescription for it.
