Just A Great Story
I recently got a call from a gentleman in New Jersey looking for a dog friendly home in south Florida. He has two larger dogs (anything over 25 lbs in Florida), was unfamiliar with the area and looking for a pet-friendly REALTOR® to help.
He went on to tell me he was selling his home in New Jersey and moving to south Florida to be with his college sweetheart. He was divorced, and her husband had passed away. They had dated for two years in college and found each other again on Facebook. Where else?
My first reaction was, 'That is the best story.'
He gave me his girlfriend's number. She was living in Delray Beach and planned to sell her condo. We met, hit it off, and I listed her condo for sale. They would have lived there, but this condo did not allow any pets.
In the meantime, this gentleman's house was under contract in New Jersey. His girlfriend and I began to look at homes in 55+ pet friendly gated communities in Delray Beach and Boynton Beach that were pet friendly to larger dogs. By larger, I'm talking 70 lbs and 30 lbs.
Inventory was low, but we saw everything on the market. She really wanted him here to pick the house, but that was impossible with packing up his house and the dogs. Thank heavens for modern technology! Each home she liked, she would Skype with him. She walked around and explained the house, and he asked questions.
Her condo in a 55+ gated community in Delray Beach went under contract in a just a few days, so it was time to get serious. They each had their closing dates. We submitted three offers on three homes, but all three went under contract before we got there. They were frustrated, as was I, knowing they would be closing on their homes soon. But I knew we would find it.
His girlfriend and I knew every house for sale in the 55+ pet friendly gated communities in Delray and Boynton Beach. She would give each house a name to remember them by. One house she dubbed "the wallpaper house" because, yes, it was covered in wallpaper! She kept avoiding it, but would circle back around.
I saw the potential in this house. It had a beautiful lake view, was on an interior lot and had a house on only one side. It was an estate sale. I knew if they put some work in, this house would be worth far more than others we had seen.
The house had a wall divding a formal living room and the family room ( or den) which was off the kitchen. She disliked the wall and wanted a house with a great room. Understandable. Many people have taken this wall down, and it looks great. Her boyfriend promised her not only would he remove the wallpaper; he would take the wall down. What a guy!
They put an offer on the wallpaper house, and it was accepted. Inspections were done. We later learned this house also had a full-house generator with an inground propane tank. A wonderful and expensive upgrade in south Florida that was not on the listing.
I kept telling them this was the best story I've heard, and I was going to do a blog post on them (without names, of course.) It was so nice to see them happy after all these years reconnected by modern technology. I just loved it.
She closed on her condo and flew up to help him drive down with the dogs. They then closed on their new house in a dog-friendly active adult community in Boynton Beach that welcomed his dogs, and they found out their neighbors were nice.
It was great. I knew the house would be worth it in the long run, as homes on a lake in south Florida command more money. The dogs were happy and adjusted pretty quickly to their new home and life in Boynton Beach.
This was just a great story, and I wanted to share it. Who doesn't like a happy ending!
