In these unprecendented times of corona virus, life, as we know it, has seemed to come to a halt. All non-essential businesses are closed, many of them mom-and-pop shops. Even some larger ones are shuttered up.
Stay in place orders has everyone at home (or supposed to be.) We've never experienced anything like this in our lifetimes.
Real estate has been pretty quiet except for some homes that were under contract before the pandemic. Some people have taken their homes off the market; others are worried about people coming in. But, still sales going on.
It's just different. We start with virtual and then progress to visit, but only with booties, masks and gloves and no opening anything. Most people understand and are okay with it. Truth is, if you're looking to buy, it's a great time with mortgage rates so low.
I don't care much for the produce from our local grocery stores. They grow pretty loads of fruits and vegetables right here in Florida, yet they import most of the produce. Makes no sense to me. It never has. Why would I be eating a California orange (don't get me wrong, they're delicious) when we grow them right here?
I had heard of a local farm where you could go and buy a box of fruits or vegetables for $ 10. What you got was the luck of the draw. I thought what a great idea, especially in these times, to buy local. Support the farm, support local businesses. They're really hurting now.
So off I went to Mecca Farms in Lake Worth last week. What a great experience it was. I had read up on it on Facebook, so I knew the drill.
I left an envelope with my order and money in my trunk. Waited a few minutes, pulled up and someone took out the envelope. They collected the money; then put my order on the windshield. I drove up. They took the order, then put two cartons in my trunk. Easy, peasy and no contact.
When I got home and upacked my two boxes, I had gotten a watermelon, canteloupe, pineapple, two mangoes, at least a dozen different kinds of peppers, 7 yellow and red tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash and 5 ears of corn.
We are living through strange and frightening times now. Small business are hurting and hurting badly. Pitch in. If you can shop local, please do. It helps everyone.
And please stay safe. I know my dogs have been a great comfort to me during the past two months. They know something is different, but they still want to be close to you and calm you. That's just how our pets are. I'm happy I live in a pet-friendly home in Delray Beach Fl. I don't know what I would do without their company.
