What is a safe room? If you live in Florida, you need to know. We live in Paradise, but once in a while Mother Nature rears her head and we have to oblige.
We've been in Florida for 22 years. This is the second time we've had to really worry. But the truth is, there is something to worry about pretty much wherever you live - earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, snow and ice. The good thing with hurricanes, if there is a good thing, is that you have time to leave. We didn't.
We chose to stay. We're inland, about 15-20 minutes from the beach. When we hear hurricane, we go into "hurricane mode." You need supplies. You need to figure out which room will be your safe room. A safe room is a room with no windows, usually a closet or laundry room, unless you have a very large home and can devote one room full time to being a safe room. Then you load with it with supplies so when the bad part of the hurricane hits, you go to your safe room.
I downloaded apps so I could check in with people, see what's going on and prayed they worked. WhatsApp worked best for me.
I set our safe room up in the master closet. I brought in bottles of water, snacks for both the doigs and us, bedding, cell phones, iPad, back-up chargers, flashlights, lanterns, radio, cards, games if you have kids, etc, etc. I even downloaded movies - a first for me. There isn't much to do sitting in a dark room, if your power goes out. The movies turned out to be a lifesaver.
Luckily, we had power until Sunday late afternoon, so it wasn't too bad. Others have not fared as well. We watched movies and I texted when I had service, which was spotty. I was supposed to be on Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland 's radio show Sunday at noon, but they couldn't hear me from our safe room, and the wind was whipping way too bad for me to leave.
Stores sell out like when they say snow storm up north. People stock up on batteries, bread, peanut butter and various supplies. Stores shelves were empty. Gas was and still is hard to come by.
It isn't pleasant, but would I leave? No. Because there is always something to deal with wherever you live, and the pluses of living in beautiful south Florida outweigh the minuses - for me.
